Sanath banned from cricket for 2 years

Former Sri Lanka captain Sanath Jayasuriya has been banned from cricket for two years after admitting two breaches of the International Cricket Council's anti-corruption code.

The 49-year-old, who was charged in October, admitted failing to co-operate with an investigation and "concealing, tampering with or destroying evidence".

248 schools in the North to be closed down!

The Northern Provincial Education Directorate has decided to close down 248 government schools in the Northern Province by the end of the year if which have fewer than 50 students and no progress would be shown. During the period of last ten years the said schools had less than 50 students.

Discussions have also been held to transfer the students of the closed down schools to nearest schools.

Mahindananda’s son arrested over accident that injured Borella Traffic OIC

The son of UPFA MP Mahindananda Aluthgamage’s son has been arrested over a hit-and-run accident which hospitalized the Borella Traffic OIC in Bamabalapitiya, stated Police Media Spokesperson.

The Traffic OIC of the Borella Police, who had been en route to the Kollupitiya Police, had met with an accident when the motorcycle he was riding was hit by a Defender in Bambalapitiya, at around 4.35 am last morning (24).

Plans for another agreement with US forces!

The Agreement signed between Sri Lanka and the USA to provide facilities for American operations had ended in 2017, but the government had again renewed this agreement, said JVP-MP Bimal Ratnayake.

The government is trying to sign a new agreement with the USA called Status Of Forces Agreement (SOFA) and discussions are currently under way, adding that if this agreement is signed, Sri Lanka would not be able to take any legal action against any American soldiers who commit wrong.

Legitimate child named 19th Amendment abused, says President

President Maithripala Sirisena has said that the legitimate child, named the 19th Amendment, given birth by him has been abused.

The President recalled that in keeping with the pledge given to the people in this country through his election manifesto for January 08, 2015 Presidential Election and with the clean and pure determination, the 19th Amendment to the Constitution was introduced and it was passed with the consent of 215 out of 225 Members of the Parliament.

Price of bag of cement goes up by Rs. 100

The price of a 50 kilogram bag of cement has been increased by Rs 100 from last Saturday (16).

According to a request made by INSEE Cement (Sanstha) and Tokyo Cement Companies from the Consumer Affairs Authority, the permission has been granted to increase the price.

Youth arrested for posting offensive FB posts

A 22-year-old man was arrested for allegedly posting offensive Facebook posts which are harmful to the Pitigala Police Station and to the Sri Lanka Police Department, police said.

They said the suspect, Shammi Dushan Chathuranga, had posted these offensive posts using a fake account.

General election prior to PC elections !

The UNP leadership has focussed his attention on holding the Provincial Council election prior to the Presidential election, a party senior told.

Accordingly, he said the UNP leadership is in discussions regarding the presenting of a proposal to parliament to dissolve parliament by the middle of this year.

CID reveals Nalaka de Silva’s ties with Madush & Amal Perera

The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has informed the court yesterday (12) that former DIG Nalaka de Silva, who was arrested in connection with the alleged VIP assassination plot, has had close ties with singer Amal Perera and ‘Makandure Madush’.

The CID further said that investigations are being carried out with the international police to unveil more information on the nexus between ‘Makandure Madush’, Amal Perera and the former DIG.

LNG tender goes to a Chinese company

The Cabinet yesterday decided to award the tender for the construction of the LNG power plant in Kerawalapitiya to a Chinese company.

Controversy surrounds this move because Lakdhanavi, a local company which made a lower bid for the project, was denied the tender. The power plant is to be built to generate 350 megawatts of electricity.

LIOC prices increased, petrol 92 Octane remains unchanged

Following the fuel price revision by the Finance Ministry last night, the Lanka Indian Oil Company (LIOC) also increased their fuel prices except for Lanka Petrol 92 Octane price with effect from last night.

LIOC Senior Vice President (Finance) Mr. Pramod Jain said according to the current revision, the price of Lanka Auto Diesel (LAD) would be increased by Rs.4 per liter and it will be Rs.103.

Sri Lanka had assured the UN to investigate and hear war crimes allegations during the final stages of the war in the North, its been four years and nothing has been done so far, said Northern Provincial Council member M.K. Sivajilingam.

SL spends 7 million for case against Weeratunge!

Sri Lanka has reportedly spent Rs. 7,329,000 in connection with a case filed pertaining to the arrest of former Russian Ambassador Udayanga Weeratunge.

It was revealed that this additional sum had been obtained by the Foreign Ministry through a supplementary estimate presented on September 20, last year.
