Be prepared for an year of elections - president tells SLFP

President Maithripala Sirisena asked SLFP electoral organizers at a meeting at President’s House yesterday (24) to prepare for an year of elections in 2019.

After the meeting, general secretary of the party Prof. Rohana Lakshman Piyadasa told the media that they would not announce their presidential candidate in advance.
However, two advisers of president Sirisena have already held talks with SLPP founder Basil Rajapaksa to get the incumbent named as their candidate.

The advisers have predicted a certain internal clash in the UNP over their candidate and said that that should be used for their advantage.

The presidential polls should be held before 08 January next year before the UNF government gained a position of strength, they said.

The president dismissed Ranil Wickremesinghe and appointed Mahinda Rajapaksa in his place on October after a promise by Basil Rajapaksa of the SLPP’s support for his candidature.
