Restrictions on motor vehicle imports come into question

Motor cars sufficient for another year had already been imported when the Finance Ministry imposed restrictions on their imports, economists say quoting Central Bank statistics.

The monthly external sector performance reports issued by the CB establishes this as a fact.

Those notices say vehicles worth 146.8 million US dollars had been imported in June 2018, compared to 54 m USD worth of vehicle imports during the corresponding period last year.

Vehicles worth 812.7 m USD had been imported in the first half of this year, compared to 370.2 m USD worth of vehicle imports during the same period last year.

Therefore, the local market will not experience a short supply of cars, economists point out.

Also, fuel worth 2,093.6 m USD was imported in the first half of 2018, compared to 1,624.5 m USD worth of imports during the same period in the previous year.
