Mangala opposes reintroducing death penalty

Mangala Samaraweerea has objected to a cabinet proposal by president Maithripala Sirisena that death penalty should be reintroduced in order to curb the narcotic drugs menace.

When the president presented the proposal yesterday (10), most ministers received it with applause, but Samaraweera remained indifferent.

When inquired, Samaraweera said that as a policy, he opposed the death penalty, adding that drug smugglers should be given a life imprisonment.

Speaking to the media after the cabinet meeting, minister Gamini Jayawickrama Perera said the ministers were unanimous that reintroducing the death penalty should be considered.

Thanking the president for moving the proposal, Perera said for the first time, all ministers agreed to a cabinet proposal.
