Rathana Thera’s document aims to put off elections?

A document launched by the Sri Lanka National Council at its first meeting at the BMICH on February 28 with MP Athuraliye Rathana Thera at the chair has come into question.

Also, no one in the UNP had been invited to attend the occasion.

The document in question titled ‘way to sustainable era - plan to build the country’ rejects the present electoral system and wants a continuation of proportional representation, but along with a provincial council election system that replaces the preferential voting method with the first-past-the-post method.

If this proposal is to be implemented, the delimitation that was completed recently will have to be done again.

However, there is belief the president is supportive of Sri Lanka National Council’s ideology, with political analysts saying the intention could be to put off the elections further.

Page 56 of the document notes that page 15 of the president’s election manifesto promises to abolish the preferential voting method.
