Piyasena Gamage sworn in as State Minister

UPFA Galle District MP Piyasena Gamage has been sworn in as the State Minister for Law & Order and Southern Development, the President’s Media Division said.

He was sworn in as the State Minister before President Maithripala Sirisena at the President’s Official Residence this morning (28).

Piyasena Gamage was sworn in as a Member of Parliament (MP) on November 10, to fill the vacant position created by the removal of former UPFA MP Geetha Kumarasinghe.

209 working days in 2018!

The number of working days in 2018 is 209, according to the calendar for the year.

That is 57.3 per cent of the total number of days.

The year has 52 Saturdays and Sundays each and 22 other holidays.

With the 30 days of leave entitled to by a worker, the total number of holidays stand at 156, which is 42.7 pc.

Underworld wants politicians to transfer OIC

An underworld leader has exerted pressure on politicians to remove the OIC of Nawagamuwa police, Manjula de Silva, if the underworld was to garner votes in Kaduwela at the upcoming election, according to ‘Rivira.’

The man in question has also tried to extort money from area’s businessmen by posing off as the gang belonging to slain underworld leader Samayan.

Ravi K will leave MP post?

The person alleged to have threatened Anika Wijesuriya, known as Shanil Nettikumara is not a relative said MP Ravi Karunanayake adding that if the Additional Solicitor General Yasantha Kodagoda proves that he is related to Karunanayake, he would resign from his MP post, he said in parliament yesterday (07).

Karunanayake raising an issue of  breach of his parliamentary privileges said if the Additional Solicitor General is unable to prove his allegation, he should apologize to the Treasury Commission.

Investigations to nab Shanil for threatening Anika

nvestigations are underway to arrest a businessman named Shanil Nettasinghe who allegedly threatened the owner of the house that was bought by Perpetual Treasuries Company Arjun Aloysius and given to Ravi Karunanayake, Anika Wijesuriya.

Investigations have revealed that the businessman had threatened the lives of Anika and her brother Vijitha Wijesuriya and family members, over the telephone.

Four senior players refuse to play in Pakistan

Skipper Upul Tharanga, his predecessor Lasith Malinga as well as seniors Dinesh Chandimal and Anjelo Mathews will not play in the T-20 game against Pakistan at Gadaffi Stadium in Lahore on October 29, according to BBC Sandeshaya.

Namal's secretary arrested in Abu Dhabi

A young woman who is said to be the former secretary of MP Namal Rajapaksa has been arrested in Abu Dhabi, reports say.
The individual, identified as Batapola Arachchilage Ornella Iresha Silva, was wanted by the FCID over her having aided Namal to launder Rs. 30 million of black money through Gower’s Corporate Services.

She is to be deported to Sri Lanka tomorrow (10), sources say.

Accounts of businessmen who gave money to Namal to be examined

The FCID is to examine 14 state and private bank accounts of three persons who had credited money to the account of UPFA MP Namal Rajapaksa in the financial irregularity said to have taken place in the leasing of 4.3 acres of Krrish Transworld Square at Colombo Fort.

Appeal to be filed against Vidya case verdict

The convicts in the Sivaloganathan Vidya rape and murder case will file an appeal within 14 days, according to their lawyer.

Lawyer Mahinda Jayawardena was speaking to the media after the three-member trial-at-bar found the seven accused guilty and sentenced them to death.

He said the crime had been committed by someone else.

Sri Lanka to halt import of non-essential food items & unhealthy foods

President Maithripala Sirisena says that the National Economic Council expects to take immediate steps to stop importing of all non-essential food items as well as unhealthy foods into the country.

He made these remarks at the opening of the Agricultural Exhibition held at the Training Institute of Department of Agriculture in Bombuwala, Kalutara.

The exhibition organized by the Western Provincial Ministry of Agriculture under the theme ‘Saru Diviyata Krushi Saviya’ will be held till September 27, the President’s Media Division said.

Consumer Affairs Authority Allows LP Gas Price Hike With District-based Maximum Retail Prices

The Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA) has sent a Price Determination Notification (PDN) yesterday to the domestic Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) suppliers Litro Gas Lanka and LAUGFS Gas PLC, allowing them to revise their domestic LP Gas prices.  Accordingly, new District-wise LPG Maximum Retail Prices too have now been finalised by the CAA.

The notification was sent in accordance with Section 18 of CAA Act and is in response to previous applications to do so by the domestic LP Gas supplier firms Litro Gas Lanka and LAUGFS Gas PLC to allow them to revise their  prices in the market.

Prices of three food items to be increased

In addition to the increase in gas prices, the eatery owners have been plunged from the frying pan into the fire, said the Canteen Owners  Association.

Under the current circumstances, they will be compelled to increase the food prices, said its national organiser Asela Sampath.

He further said, “The All Ceylon Canteen Owners Association will meet today and take a decision on increasing the price of food items. We have already focussed on increasing the price of three food items. Accordingly, we will decide on a price for lunch packets, milk tea and short eats. We intend to implement this price revision through the Consumer Affairs Authority,” he added.

Mental required for driving license

In obtaining a driving license in addition to the medical fitness certificate, applicants will also soon be required to submit a mental health certificate, said the Chairman of the National Council for Road Safety (NCRS), Dr. Sisira Kodagoda.

He said this measure was being taken due to the rising number of road accidents.

Measures have been taken to submit a Cabinet proposal by the Transport and Civil Aviation Minister Nimal Siripala de Silva.
