President Mahinda Rajapaksa today stated that ending a three decades-long war within just 3 years of coming to power is a feat unmatched in any other country in the world.

However, the government now has to go to Geneva every six months in order to respond to allegations of civilian deaths during the final stages of the war, he said.

He stated that while bombs have stopped exploding in Sri Lanka they have not started to explode in Geneva.

The President stated that no one talks about the pain and suffering felt by the people for 30 long years and the fact that no terrorist act has taken place in the country since the war ended on May 18, 2009.

Even the people in the country have forgotten this situation when they walking freely in the roads, he said, adding that in a way that is a good thing.

Speaking at a ceremony after declaring open Sri Lanka’s second expressway today, the President stated that government’s development process is building friendship between communities and that no matter what development activities are carried out foreigners measure a country’s development from highways.

Rajapaksa stated that world leaders arriving in the country next month for the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting will be able to see for themselves the current situation of the country.

He stated that accusations are being hurled at the government from all sides with some calling it the “brothers’ company” and claiming that building these expressways are useless.

The President urged the masses to believe in the government and to love this country. Some people don’t love their motherland and they betray the country when the travel abroad and speak, he said.
