Dual citizens disallowed from being PC councilors

The provincial councils act has provisions to disallow dual citizens from holding membership in the PCs, the legal division of the election commission says.

The relevant act, in its Sinhala version refers to it as ‘being loyal to another country’, whereas the English one says ‘being loyal to a country outside the Commonwealth.’

Head of the commission Mahinda Deshapriya says the Sinhala version will be applicable.

‘Anidda’ quotes him as having said that new laws should be introduced to make it mandatory for a candidate to submit a sworn affidavit that says the holder is not a dual citizen.
